APIRB allows vessels not required to fit Class A in terms of SOLAS regulation, to fit an AIS device that meets ISPS code and Marine Domain Awareness (MDA) requirements, where applicable. It is also a solution for Search and Rescue craft that only need to transmit their own identification and position. APIRB supports AIS VDL messages 18, 24A and 24B, including:
• MMSI Number • Name of vessel • Call Sign • Type of vessel • Vessel dimensions • Position • Speed (SOG) • Heading • Course (COG) AIS’ receiving these messages, if connected to a compatible Chart Plotter or Electronic Chart System (ECS, ECDIS) can display this data giving the Officer On Watch or Operator a visual interpretation of this vessel (for information on compatibility, please contact your local supplier). Position, course, heading and speed of vessels fitted with an APIRB can be observed, and by using a vessels name or call sign, that vessel can be called up on a VHF/DSC radio in order to ascertain its intentions, advise on course of action to be taken or instruct it accordingly. APIRB uses FATDMA, FASMTV scheme for transmission schedule. The transmission schedule is user configurable. Standard update rates range between 1 and 60 transmissions per hour. The FATDMA transmission schedule must be configured in accordance with local authority requirements. |
